2 Let s compare the consonants that are look-a-likes Notice the differences between each of these look-a-like consonants: Letter Name of letter & the difference or uniqueness of the letter Print ב כ ג נ ד ר ך ו ן ז ה ח ת ע צ ס ם Vet (note: the flat bottom bar) Chaf (note: how the letter is rounded) Gimmel (note: foot on lower right) Nun (note: top & bottom bars are both short) Dalet (note: top bar is straight & extends a bit to the right) Resh (note: resh is similar ;דto however, top bar doesn t extend to right) Chaf sofit (similar to,ר only tail hangs below the line) Vav (note: similar to ;ר only top bar is short) Nun sofit (note: similar to,ו only tail hangs below the line) Zayin ( note: similar to,ו only top bar is slanted) Hey (note: opening on top left) Chet (note: there is no opening on top left) Tav (note: looks like,ח but has foot on bottom left) Ayin (note: how the letter is rounded on the bottom) Tsade (note: how this letter has a straight bottom and the cross line is also straight) Samech (note: how this letter is rounded) Mem sofit (note: how the mem sofit has a flat bottom & a flat right side) 29 P a g e
3 Two of the o & oo types of vowels have a fun way to remember them. 1. For instance, if I were to tap you on top of the head, you d probably say Oh! a. That s exactly what we say when we see a :וֹ it s sound is oh! For example: טוֹב (tov). b. Another o vowel is formed the same, only it doesn t have the vav. It only has the dot (or cholam). For example: בּ ק ר (bo-kehr); י ע קב (Yah-ah-kov). ע נ י example: c. And the 3 rd type is a chatef kamats, which also has the same sound of oh. For (oh-nee). 2. However, if I were to tap you in the tummy, you d say oo (as in pool). a. And that s the sound of the!וּ For example: שׁבוּ ע (shah-voo-ah). b. And the 2nd type of oo sound vowel has 3 slanted dots below the letter.א For example: הע דת The o & oo types of vowels Book print וֹ Name of vowel Note: this vowel is always written with the vav חוֹלם וו & is called cholam vav (חוֹלם מל א (also called: cholam male Vowels: o & oo-types Sound of vowel Block Print o-type vowels וֹ oh as in row א ף קמץ This vowel is chatef kamats א Note: the cholam can be written with most חוֹלם consonants. Called cholam חט וּ א Note: this vowel is always written with a vav שׁוּ רק & is called shurek Note: the kibbuts can be written with most consonants & is called kibbuts oh as in row oh as in row oo-type vowels oo as in pool וּ ק בּוּץ oo as in pool Write each letter 30 P a g e
4 Practice reading words with these vowels Read words below (note: accented syllables are in bold & highlighted) נ כוֹן Right or correct O ) nah-chon (long כ בוֹד glory, honor or splendor O ) kah-vod (long Scroll) Holy Ark (storage cabinet for the Sefer Torah, Torah א רוֹן ה קד שׁ ah-ron -- hahk-kodehsh (long O ) ל אמר to say O ) leh-mor (long סוֹף (ם sofit as in mem,סוֹ פ ת end or close (the same root as O ) sof (long סוֹפת suffix or ending, as in mem sofit.ם (same root as (סוֹף so-feet affliction, poverty עני (Deut 24:12) (oh-nee) ה ע דת the testimony hah-eh-dut עד witness ehd ע ד eternal ahd Let s read common Hebrew expressions Read words below (note: accented syllables are in bold & highlighted) All the honor; congratulations (pronounced the same as kol -- hahk-kah-vod below) word כל הכ בוֹד All the honor; congratulations (pronounced the same as word above. The same expression only 2 ways to spell the kol -- hahk-kah-vod כל הכ בוֹד first word.) Have a good Shabbat! shahb-baht -- shah-lom שׁב ת שׁ לוֹם טוֹב Good tov ב ק ר טוֹב Good morning! bo-kehr -- tov ע ר ב טוֹב Good evening! (Tip: when 2 segols in a 3 or 4-letter word, the 1 st gets the accent) eh-rehv -- tov שׁבוּ ע טוֹב Have a good week shah-vu-ah -- tov מ ה ז ה? Read again the Hebrew words in this lesson.
